Daviess County responds to Mid-States Corridor Announcement
April 20, 2022
WASHINGTON, Indiana - Following the formal release of the Tier 1 Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), the Daviess County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) responds positively and energetically to the unveiling of Alternative P as the preferred route for the Mid-States Corridor.
Following three years of thoughtful consideration, INDOT and the State of Indiana determined which of the six proposed routes would be added to the state’s transportation sector. Route P starts in Spencer County and uses existing U.S. 231 until it links with Interstate 64. A new, 54-mile portion of the road would then branch off and run parallel to U.S. 231 in Daviess and Martin counties before linking with I-69 just north of the WestGate@Crane Certified Technology Park and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane Division.
In July 2020, the Advance Daviess County Coalition, a cohort of the DCEDC, launched the Daviess Driven campaign to promote the community and region’s future and elevate Daviess County in the Mid-States Corridor discussion.
“Recognizing growth and retention, workforce, and supply chain creation as top points of interest for Daviess County, we look to advance every opportunity that allows Daviess County to move forward in ways that not only promote economic development but also intentional population growth. With Daviess County’s strategic location along the I-69 Corridor, we recognized the Mid-States Corridor as a critical opportunity to further our economic development strategies,” said Bryant Niehoff, executive director of the Daviess County Economic Development Corporation.
Throughout the campaign, leaders throughout the county worked to advocate on behalf of enhancing our county's economic, tourism, and travel industries.
With this in mind, the DCEDC identified the Mid-States Corridor as a prime opportunity for leaders to promote a transformative transportation project for Daviess County, the region, and the State of Indiana.
As identified in the Indiana Uplands READI proposal, A Region on the Rise, the Mid-States Corridor has been a priority for the region. DCEDC understood that no matter the chosen route, Daviess County and the region would benefit from the project’s residual effects. The DCEDC backed the project with this in mind.
“We are happy to see the announcement of the Mid-States Corridor route as the decision promotes regional growth with many benefits to our local economy. As leaders of Daviess County, we will continue to work with INDOT and others to take advantage of every opportunity that aligns with this new transportation ecosystem. Today, our collective region is stronger and ready to embrace what's around the next corner. As our state continues to elevate and grow, so will Daviess County,” continued Niehoff.
